Shamanic Journeying...
In Shamanic practice, it is believed that part of the soul is free to leave the body.  This free soul is believed to leave the body regularly
during dreaming.  When a person journeys the soul leaves the body, and may travel to a spiritual aspect of places on the earth, or
may go within the earth, or above it - usually called the upper, lower, and middle worlds.

How does one Journey?
The journey occurs by shifting awareness or consciousness in order to allow part of your sou to leave the body.  The drum and/or rattle is frequently used.
The slow repetitive rhythm of the drumming shifts the individuals "rhythm" so that he or she can journey.  The journey is then achieved by the person's
intent to leave.

What is Journeying for?
Journeying, like meditation is a tool for spiritual growth.  It is also a tool that can be used for healing, obtaining information, and working through
psychological issues.  When someone goes on a journey, they are able to communicate on a spiritual level.  So they can go and visit guardian spirits,
spirits of the land, or power animals that can provide healing and insight.  A journey differs from a dream because the individual is able to direct the journey
and he/she may learn unexpected things.  The journey is a tool for spiritual growth because the individual can seek out evolved spiritual teachers.

Where do you Journey to?
The places you will journey to will vary.  Some will be much like geography seen on earth, mountains, trees, valleys...Some places are airy like the sky, or
have a very energetic or peaceful feel.  A journey destination can be anything because the geography is not bound by rules of gravity but by the rules of
energy.  The purpose of the journeyer will sometimes determine what places will be visited.

What is experienced during a Journey?
The way each journeyer experiences the places they visit is different.  One may see really well while another may not see but hear or feel.  Some
experience leaving their body, and experience with all senses, some may not.  The senses that are predominant in an individual's daily life may not be the
same that are strongest while journeying.  In some cases it can be difficult for the journeyer to accept what they are experiencing is real or valid because it
does not have a visual component, or because it is different to the sensory way they experience their daily life.

Trusting in your ability to Journey...
It is usually the person who can not shut off their critical mind that has the most trouble journeying.  This is because the mind grounds you in your body and
makes it difficult to allow the soul to leave.  It is most effective to let go of all critical voices and thoughts as you prepare to journey.  The initial senses of the
new journeyer can sometimes be delicate, and only become strong over time is they allow their mind to ease.  A skeptical mind is not a problem, as long
as it does not interfere with your ability to free the soul for journeying.

Can I Journey?
Yes, journeying seems to be a skill that people posses innately.  As if it is something we already know how to do, we simply need to be reminded of how.
You do not have to be a Shaman to journey, just be open to the experience and learning that can come from it.  It may not be a tool for everyone but it can
be used by anyone who feels it would be helpful for them.  For those who may be interested in learning to journey, a workshop is a good way to learn.  It
also seems easier to learn the technique with a group of people.  The effectiveness of shamanic work, and the journeying, seems to be magnified when
performed with a group.

Essences of Healing offers an Introductory Workshop for Journeying.  Elaine has studied Shaman with Leontine Hartzell and
has successfully taught others how to journey in a safe and comfortable environment.  Learn How to Journey to non-ordinary reality -
you will be given simple to understand guidance on how to journey to the lower world to meet a power animal, and to the upper world
to meet a spirit guide/teacher.  There is time for discussion before and after each journey as well a time to journal if you so choose.
We encourage you to bring something to lay on, a blanket or pillow - anything to make your experience more comfortable.  Also,
something to cover the eyes (bandana, eye mask, eye pillow) helping to fully darken the room to enhance your experience.  And a
notebook and pen for you to write about your experience.  The cost of the workshop is $35.  Space is limited so please call or email
your intention/interest to attend.  We look forward to sharing this journey with you!
